EMGA believes that supportive workplace policies and practices increase organizational productivity and support the physical and emotional health of employees and their families.

Supported by the City of Austin, the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Early Matters Greater Austin, the Family-Friendly Workplace Initiative is designed to help employers explore the benefits of family-friendly workplaces, assess current business practices, identify opportunities for potential change, and connect employees with local family resources.

To accomplish this work, EMGA published the Family-Friendly Workplace Toolkit. This guide acts as a resource for both the employer and their employee. As part of the Toolkit, EMGA incorporated a Family-Friendly Workplace Assessment. This assessment tool allows for employers to better understand how “family-friendly” their current policies are and to learn about weaknesses or gaps in those policies. It generates an “impact card” that identifies areas where a business has opportunities to improve, and the toolkit can then be the resource used for ideas on these practices.

The Goal

EMGA’s goal is that 500 businesses in Austin/Travis County commit to adopting family-friendly practices and policies by 2020.

We believe this will benefit the economic well-being and long-term health of our community for the following reasons:

  • In a thriving economy with low unemployment and competition for workers, family-friendly employers have a competitive advantage.

  • Investments now in early learning are critical to preparing our workforce of tomorrow. Family-friendly workplaces provide a universal entry to conversations about the importance of investing in the early childhood years.

  • Supportive workplace practices increase organizational productivity and support the physical and emotional health of employees and their families.
